SEARSPORT — Walter Lloyd Hamm, 88 years old, went home peacefully to be with his Lord and savior Saturday July 17, 2021, after a battle with Alzheimer’s. Walter was born Oct. 8, 1933, in Swanville to Cyrus and Daisy (Arbuckle) Hamm. He had a mother who was loving and caring and a hard-working father from whom he learned how to be a supporter for his own family.

He later moved to Massachusetts and married his first wife, Joyce (Churchill) Matson, with whom he had two children. They later moved back to Maine and resided in Macleod’s trailer park, and he worked at the Truit brothers. Each day he came home from work and would go have coffee with his dear friend Wendall Macleod at Darne’s restaurant. He enjoyed hunting with his brother-in-law, Bud Dyer, and was good at playing lawn darts.

Later he married Ruth (Gilmore) Hamm. He retired from Penobscot Frozen Foods. They spent summers camping, which he loved, even driving all the way to Utah. They enjoyed car rides and shopping, never knew each day where or what they would be doing. He was a longtime member of Swanville Community Church and served for years as a deacon. They all became his second family. He and his wife, Ruth, sister Dot and brother-in-law Bud formed the gospel singing group “The Silver Saints,” and enjoyed singing at area churches. Each summer they helped organize an outdoor concert at the church. Walter loved singing for the Lord. He loved celebrating holidays with family and eating pie, biscuits with butter and Ruthie’s homemade pickles. He took pride in keeping his home and yard always looking nice, as well as feeding the birds. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends, especially his daughter.

Daddy, I will see you again in heaven with my arms open wide and a smile on my face to tell you I love you. Until then you are in my heart and will be so missed. But when I think of you, I will smile, for I am grateful and blessed God gave you to me as my daddy. I am at peace, my soul’s at rest, there is no need for tears, for with your love I was blessed for all these many years.

Walter was predeceased by his parents and siblings Rudolph, Raymond, Carl, Billy, Murial, Celia, Tena, Annie May, Ethel, Dottie, Day and Carlene, and a stepdaughter, Rhonda Rhodes.

Walter is survived by his wife, Ruth; his sister, Jean Howard of Searsport; his children, Michelle Small and husband Kevin of Belfast and  Michael Hamm and wife Nancy of Venice, Fla.; two stepchildren, Randy Rhodes and wife Helen of Searsport and Rusty Rhodes of Belfast; grandchildren Miranda, Meagan, Brooke, Rachel, Joshua, Randy Jr., Nancy, Amy, Mandi and Bailey; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A big thank-you to all the amazing staff at Tall Pines, the Commons, for their care and compassion and wonderful support while my father was there. Another thank-you to Kindred Hospice for their care and support in his last days. I can’t thank everyone enough for all their prayers, love and support.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at Smart Cemetery in Belfast.  Memories and condolences may be sent to ripostafh.com.
