BELFAST — Morgan Porter, 32, of Carmel has been charged with driving while her license was suspended after telling officers she fell asleep at the wheel Tuesday, July 20. Her vehicle collided with another car on Swan Lake Avenue, according to Belfast Police Sgt. Lewis Dyer IV.

Porter told officers she fell asleep while driving south on Swan Lake Avenue in her Subaru Forester, then drifted into oncoming traffic, hitting a Toyota Corolla driven by a man who had a minor in his car. The driver of the Corolla swerved, but was still struck.

The Forester continued off the road, hit a tree and came to rest on its side in the ditch. Porter was taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Dyer said. He said both cars were destroyed in the crash.

Three officers and Belfast Fire and Ambulance responded to the accident, which was reported by nearby property owners at 2:50 p.m. The fire department directed traffic for over an hour at the scene.

Occupants of the Corolla appear to have been wearing their seatbelts, but Porter did not appear to be wearing hers, Dyer said. Front airbags in both vehicles were deployed. Belfast Police Department is still investigating the incident. Porter will be in court Sept. 10 for driving after suspension.
