VERONA ISLAND  — Kenneth W. “Ken” Cox, 93, passed away peacefully July 13, 2021. He was born April 4, 1928, in Malden, Mass, the oldest of three boys to Fabian K. Cox and Helen Cox (Sullivan).

He graduated from Melrose High School in 1945 and enrolled in the engineering school at Tufts College. He was asked to join the Tufts cross-country team. In March 1946 he enlisted in the Navy and was selected to attend the Aerology School at Lakehurst NAS to become a weatherman. Upon discharge from the Navy, he returned to Tufts as a geology major and competed on the track team.

He became a weather observer on Mount Washington in New Hampshire for a year, which required him to stay on the mountain through the sub-zero winter. Little did he know how his life would change when he was tested to be a photogrammetrist with the U.S. Geological Survey and moved to Arlington, Va. It was there that he met and fell in love with the girl next door.

Ken and Verna P. Michaud were married Feb. 27, 1946, in Old Orchard and moved to Orono, where Ken started a 25-year career as chief photogrammetrist for the James W. Sewall Co. They moved to Belfast in 1963 to start Hearthside of Maine, a braiding business, and raise their children. They built and sold three more homes, eventually settling in Verona Island.

Ken loved working outside, the Red Sox, having his family around and “creating” in the kitchen. The most important part of each day was being with Verna.

Ken is survived by the love of his life, Verna P. Cox (Michaud); his children. Karen Keating (husband Edward), Maureen “Rene” Davis, Kenny Cox and Patty Thumann; grandchildren Adam Cogswell, Emily Senene (husband Mawande), Kirk Davis, Kyle Davis, Eli Cox (wife Camilla), Anneliese Thumann, Dylan Thumann and Aidan Thumann; great-grandchildren Calvin and Ani Senene; brother Robert Cox (wife Nancy); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Ken was predeceased by his son David Allen Cox, brother Fabian Cox and son-in-law Richard Davis.

There will be a private graveside service for the family at Grove Cemetery in Belfast at a future date.

Funeral arrangements are with Mitchell Tweedie Funeral Home, Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church, 60 Franklin St., Bucksport, ME 04416, in Ken’s memory.
