History note

From The Republican Journal, Sept. 20, 1894: “The schools opened September 10th with the same teachers, except the mountain school, which Miss Billings is teaching. With such good teachers, we cannot fail to have good schools. Prof. L. W. Hadley came to Frankfort on his wheel to vote. He is teaching in Searsport.”

These few lines show us that newspaper writers of the 1890s didn’t need to have a mastery of punctuation or knowledge of whether or not to use capital letters. Also note that the “wheel” refers to a bicycle. Prof. Hadley’s “wheel” was probably one of those early models with one, huge wheel and a smaller one in back.

Perchin’ prediction

Daily thunderstorms have kept me off the water for the last several weeks. However, I hear from a fishing buddy that squid are in the bay, and in big numbers. If you never caught squid, just buy some squid jigs and try your luck. Remember to hold the squid above the water at rod’s length so that it can safely discharge its “ink.”
