BELFAST — Award-winning Belfast painter David Estey is featured in a guest solo show Aug. 4 through 29 at Local Color Gallery, 135 High St. The opening celebration is Saturday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Local Color Gallery will also feature Estey’s work in the Fourth Friday Art Walk Aug. 27.
Estey is a graduate of Crosby High School in Belfast, Rhode Island School of Design and George Washington University. He has lived, exhibited and taught art in Maine, the Mid-Atlantic States and North Carolina. Estey has been in 23 solo shows and more than 90 juried or group exhibits, including recently being accepted into a nationally-competitive museum show juried by acclaimed New York artist Paul Ching-Bor.
Estey describes his work as purely improvisational, an abstract exploration of marks on a surface that justify themselves. As a Mainer, he feels he cannot escape the serene beauty of the snowy fields, the blue-black waters and the rugged coast – not to mention the major issues facing humanity. They are all a visceral part of his work.
