NORTHPORT — The 38th Coastal Field Hockey Play Day Championships, an annual preseason event for high school squads, will swing in on Wednesday, Aug. 24 as five schools from coastal and central Maine will participate.

Camden Hills of Rockport, Mount View of Thorndike, Boothbay Region, Hampden Academy and host Belfast will participate in the play day, which will begin at 11 a.m. at Point Lookout.

Scoring for the play day is unconventional as one point is earned for a shot on goal saved by the goalie and five points for each goal scored. Each team will play four games, with a tournament champion declared at the conclusion of the final game based on the accumulation of total team points throughout the day.

Games are 25 minutes running time and concessions will be available.

The tournament has been an annual precursor to the start of the high school field hockey season since 1983. The event was not held last year due to COVID-19. The 37th play day was held in 2019.

The schedule of game for 2021 includes: Mount View versus Belfast, 11:30 a.m.; Hampden Academy versus Camden Hills, noon; Camden Hills versus Belfast, 12:30 p.m.; Mount View versus Boothbay, 1 p.m.; Belfast versus Hampden Academy, 1:30 p.m.; Camden Hills versus Mount View, 2 p.m.; Belfast versus Boothbay, 2:30 p.m.; Hampden Academy versus Mount View, 3 p.m.; Boothbay versus Camden Hills, 3:30 p.m.; and Boothbay versus Hampden Academy, 4 p.m.
