My thanks, again, to my brother for guest-writing for me last week. While he is my go-to guest columnist, I’d love to hear from you if you have a subject about which you want to write, or have me write about.

There are a few community events coming up this month and early next month.

On Aug. 21, the American Legion will have a “dine in, take out” chicken barbecue. A plate is $10, and includes 1/2 chicken, barbecue sauce, baked beans, roll, chips, dessert and beverage. It will be held at 108 Windermere Lane, Unity. Food will be served from noon until it is gone.

Freedom Field Day is also on Aug. 21. It starts at 10:30 a.m. down at the park, with scheduled activities running until noon.

Finally, there is a public supper at the Freedom Congregational Church Sept. 4. It will be $9 for adults, $3 for children between 3 and 12, and free for children younger than 3. Dinner will be chicken and biscuits with vegetables, salads, coffee, punch and dessert. All proceeds benefit church projects.

There is now a COVID outbreak at Waldo County General Hospital, and Waldo County is rated as the worst place in Maine regarding transmission rates. Please be careful out there and be considerate of others. We have suffered enough with a lack of social events and public-place restrictions — it would be awful to have to reinstitute such restrictions.

On Monday I sat in on the Select Board meeting via Zoom, something I hope to start doing regularly. If you have an interest in following town government, this is a great way to do so from the comfort of your own house. I was able to hear each speaker clearly, and you can be emailed a copy of the meeting minutes. Contact the Town Office if you want to be put on this email list.
