BELFAST — Lion soccer players past and present will show off their skills on the pitch at what coaches hope will become an annual Belfast Area High School alumni game.

The game, which will pit Lion alumni against the 2021 crop of BAHS boys soccer players, will be on Saturday, Aug. 21. Players will meet and greet around 5 p.m., with the game slated to begin around 5:30 p.m.

Justin Varney is in his first season guiding the boys varsity team, while Collin Cunning will be the junior varsity coach. Varney and Cunning are former BAHS soccer players and played in college, as Varney played at Division II Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H. and Cunning at Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J.

“A lot of the community has reached out about how excited they are,” said Varney. “So this is just a really cool thing for us to one, show players that there’s community support, and two, to show the alumni that we’re here and we’re here to support them as well.”

Dale Cross, for years the Waldo County YMCA executive director, also will be a volunteer assistant coach, as will his son Aaron Cross.

“We grew up in Belfast and went through all these Y programs through Dale and most of the alumni that are going to be there are all ones that have influenced us and our playing and our coaching,” Varney said. “So this will be piecing it all together and closing the loop so to speak.”
