Rabid raccoon

According to the town website, the town received word Aug. 19 that a raccoon killed in Palermo tested positive for rabies. Rabies is a virus that affects the brain and spinal cord resulting in dangerous and unpredictable behavior, particularly in wild animals.

Attached to the post is fact sheet from the Maine CDC about animal rabies. All dogs registered in Maine are required to have current rabies vaccinations to protect themselves and their owners, and it is important to keep vaccinations updated in farm or other domesticated animals.

The town recommends you take extra precautions: keep dogs on a closer leash, fasten trash can lids tightly, do not leave pet food outside, and especially avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals.
