NORTHPORT — As it has in the preseason for nearly four decades, the Coastal Field Hockey Play Day Championships swung in with vigor on Tuesday, Aug. 24 as five high school teams engaged in quality tune-ups for the regular season.

The play day, in its 38th year, was held at Point Lookout and hosted by Belfast Area High School. And the Lions, as typically is the case, hoisted the championship trophy as they roared to victory.

Mount View of Thorndike, Camden Hills of Rockport, Hampden Academy and Boothbay Region also participated in the event.

Belfast finished first, while Hampden Academy was second; Camden Hills, third; Mount View, fourth; and Boothbay, fifth. Scores for the play day were unavailable.

Tuesday’s first-place finish marked the 28th time in 39 years the Lions won the event, which began in 1983 and is an unofficial kickoff to the fall season for a handful of Midcoast field hockey teams.

Due to COVID-19, last season was the first time the event was not held.

The scoring for the tournament is unconventional as five points are awarded for goals scored and one point for each shot on goal saved by a team’s goalie. The champion is crowned by who compiles the most points through four games.
