UNION — There was no grass to mow, but there were races to be won so what did men and women do for fun on Friday night, Aug. 27 at the Union Fair? Well, they revved their souped-up machines and competed in the always fun and entertaining Thunder Valley Lawn Mower Drag Races.

The event has been held in the past at the Maine Blueberry Festival/Union Fair and, on Friday, fans filled the stands and lined fences to get a peek at the “cutting edge” mower-to-mower action on the horse-racing track.

Sandra Crabtree of Searsmont won the stock division and Dave Dyer of Searsmont the outlaw division, while Dan Littlefield of Belfast collected victories in the commercial, small mod and big mod races.

Racers in the stock division were: Briar Lyons, Sandra Crabtree, Vicki Boetsch and Jessica Johnson.

Racers in the small mod division were: John Calderwood, Dan Littlefield, Rodney Berry and John Ogletree.

Racers in the big mod division were: Don Turner, Aaron Boetsch, Erik Tolman, Greg Boetsch, Scott Crockett, Kipper Boetsch, Brian Moody, Don Inmann, Rodney Berry and Dan Littlefield.

Racers in the commercial division were: Jessica Johnson and Dan Littlefield.

Racers in the outlaw division were: Cliff Pendleton, David Dyer, George Heal and Dave Pike.
