LIBERTY — A woman’s body was discovered in Cargill Pond early Wednesday morning, Sept. 1.

Maggie Phillips, 71, of Liberty was found in the water at approximately 4:02 a.m., according to Shannon Moss, information officer for the Department of Public Safety.

Maine State Police responded shortly before midnight Tuesday, Aug. 31, after a resident called police concerned about her neighbor, who was missing.

Police determined that for an unknown reason, Phillips entered Cargill Pond, which is southeast of Lake St. George. Troopers checked the pond using kayaks and flashlights until members of the Maine Warden Service arrived. Liberty Fire Department made its boat available for the retrieval of the body.

Police said there were no signs of foul play.

In a Facebook post, Liberty Fire Chief Bill Gillespie thanked crew members who responded saying, “Your professionalism and compassion for others did not go unnoticed.”
