NORTHPORT — The Belfast field hockey team got a difficult draw in its season-opening match on Friday, Sept. 3 as it hosted Lawrence of Fairfield — heralded as one of the top teams in the region — for 60 minutes of stick-wielding action at Point Lookout.

The teams were scoreless through the first 30 minutes before the Bulldogs scored the only two goals of the game in the third quarter en route to a 2-0 shutout win over the Lions.

Maddie Niles and Holly Bolduc caged goals in the win for Lawrence.

The Bulldogs held a 26-4 edge in shots and 4-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Madison Shorey made 21 saves in the cage for Belfast, while Emma Poulin made two saves in goal for Lawrence.
