NORTHPORT — A three-car crash on Atlantic Highway claimed the life of a Northport woman late Tuesday morning.

According to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, Brenda Bonin, 69, died of her injuries after a pickup truck driven by Robert Richard, 68, of Belfast, rear-ended her car as she was turning left into a driveway.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m. Sept. 7 on Route 1 in the vicinity of mailbox 845. Police said Bonin was traveling south and the impact of the crash propelled her car into the northbound lane, where it was struck by a third vehicle, driven by Stephanie Hayes, 41, of Bristol, with a 4-year-old passenger.

While Richard did not suffer any serious injuries from the crash, Hayes and her passenger were taken to Waldo County General Hospital with minor injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Belfast Fire and Ambulance services, Northport Fire Department and Northport First Responders.

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said, with Maine State Police reconstructing the crash to determine its exact cause.
