Route 1A in Stockton Springs is now closed. Southbound traffic is being directed to Route 174, and northbound is being directed on up Route 1. This closure is expected to continue until 9/21/2021. The entire project is expected to be completed in October. For more information, contact MDOT representative Art Morgan at 446-2708 or Arthur.Morgan@maine.gov. Residents are beginning to complain about the speeds and traffic on Harris Road, so please slow down and be respectful of the residents.

Community Library

The  library needs a few more volunteers. To maintain its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, and with it the ability to secure much-needed grants, SSCL needs to stay open 18 hours a week. Two volunteers work each shift. You can help by working as little as one shift a month (shifts are two to three hours, depending on the day). Complete training is provided. Digital Maine Library is available to every resident of Maine at library.digitalmaine.org.

Autumn is officially here with the equinox Wednesday, Sept. 22. We still have long daylight hours with the sunrise about 6:23 a.m. and sunsets about 6:31 p.m. Daylight Saving Time does not end until November. Apple orchards are open and corn mazes as well. Pumpkins are such happy symbols of the fall.

Some trees in low-lying areas are already sporting patches of red leaves. At the website MaineFoliage.com there are weekly reports. Maine was in a drought condition last year but this year there has been lots of rain, so foliage should be beautiful. It’s usually at peak conditions in the Midcoast region around mid-October. Last year a friend and I drove up to Greenville during the peak and it was gorgeous. Another drive is the St. John Valley/Fish River National Scenic Byway at the top of Maine. No need to go very far when it is peak as there are many lovely drives close to home as well. Every season in Maine is unique in its beauty!

Thought for the week

“My sorrow, when she’s here with me, thinks these dark days of autumn rain are beautiful as days can be; she loves the bare, the withered tree; she walks the sodden pasture lane.” — Robert Frost.
