BELFAST — Next month ushers in a new era for two local public accounting firms.

In 1954, Raymond Nickerson started what is now Nickerson Professional Association. Son Michael Nickerson came on board in 1983 and took over ownership in 1987. Madeline Tomlin started what is now MTA Accounting in 1977. Daughter Kali Tomlin McCarthy joined her firm in 2010 and assumed ownership in 2015.

On Oct. 1, Nickerson Professional Association will merge with MTA Accounting, Nickerson and McCarthy have announced.

“Combining these two firms under the banner of MTA Accounting will more than double the staff and resources available to offer services to individuals and businesses in the Midcoast region,” Nickerson said in a press release.

“I’m excited to watch what Kali can do with the combined firms. She and I share similar backgrounds and business philosophies. After almost 40 years in public accounting, I’m ready to ‘pass the baton’ and enjoy retirement.”

McCarthy said, “Supporting local businesses and our community as a trusted adviser and seeing success and growth is what makes this all so rewarding. Mike has built a solid foundation providing these services, and I welcome the opportunity to continue his role in the future.”

Both of the newly merged company’s offices — the MTA location at 71 High St. and the Nickerson location at 69 Lincolnville Ave. — will remain in operation and fully staffed, according to the announcement.
