Seven companies with locations in Belfast were rated among the “Best Places to Work in Maine” in 2021.

The 16-year-old “Best Places to Work in Maine” program saw the largest number of companies participating this year, with 100 organizations named to the list.

Locally, Allen Insurance and Financial, with a branch office at 94 High St., ranked 19th among 47 winning medium-size companies (50 to 249 employees), while Downeast Credit Union, 94 Lincolnville Ave., ranked 24th.

Among the 20 large company winners (250 or more employees) with Belfast locations, Edward Jones at 132 Church St. ranked fourth, Bangor Savings Bank at 7 Belmont Ave. and 106 Main St. was sixth, Hammond Lumber Co. at 30 Belmont Ave. ranked 13th, athenahealth at 3 Hatley Road was 14th, and Camden National Bank, with branches at 156 Main St. and 17 Belmont Ave., ranked 18th.

This year’s top winners for all categories in the “Best Places to Work in Maine” program are companies new to the top spot designation, according to a press release from the program.

Dechra, a veterinary pharmaceutical company, took top honors among large companies. JMG (Jobs for Maine Graduates), an Augusta based nonprofit, took top honors in the medium employer category, and NIC Maine (formerly Maine Information Network) attained the top spot among smaller businesses (15 to 49 employees).

Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resources Management decided not to host the organizations making the “Best Places to Work in Maine” list in person this year because of COVID-19 numbers and in the interest of public safety, according to a press release.

The “Best Places to Work in Maine” program recognizes companies that have established and consistently fostered outstanding workplace environments. The assessment process, administered by Best Companies Group, evaluated each company’s employee policies and procedures as well as survey responses from the companies’ employees.

Endorsing partners of the program include Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Maine HR Convention and Mainebiz. Sponsors include KMA Consulting, Clark Insurance, HUB International, Pro Search, Machias Savings Bank, cPort Credit Union and Sebago Technics.
