BELFAST — A Stockton Springs mother charged with fatally beating her 3-year-old son in June pleaded not guilty, Monday, Oct. 18, at the Waldo Judicial Center.

Jessica Trefethen, 35, also known as Jessica Williams and Jessica Johnson, and her mother took Trefethen’s son, Maddox Williams, to Waldo County General Hospital June 20, when the boy became unresponsive.

According to court documents, Trefethen told hospital staff Maddox had been knocked down by a dog leash and kicked by his 8-year-old sister. The hospital reported the boy was not breathing and had no pulse when he arrived and the emergency room team was unable to resuscitate him.

Maine State Police arrested Trefethen June 23, after the state medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by multiple blunt force trauma.

Lisa Marchese, deputy attorney general and chief of the Criminal Division, told reporters following Monday’s hearing that, because of the state court system backlog, it could be 18 months before Trefethen’s case goes to trial.
