BELFAST — The Belfast Area High School girls junior varsity soccer team had a little bit of everything during its 2021 season, including one victory on the pitch.

Led by coach Kali McCarthy, the Lions were able to play six partial jayvee games, in a variety of 11-on-11, nine-on-nine and seven-on-seven formats, as they netted one victory along the way.

“We lost and gained players for a variety of reasons throughout the season so our roster was a bit of a revolving door,” she said.

Team members included Adria Barrows, Catrina Mathis, Kaylee Dodd, Mila Donaghy, Naomi Agbuya, Phoebe Hall-Arnett, Luna Carlson, Clara Stout, Morgan Curtis, Brianna Grindle, Zarrah Barnes and Lily Cortez.

“Overall it was a positive learning experience and the girls are very supportive of each other,” said McCarthy. “We had several players make huge improvements and earn varsity playing time.”

She said the team’s game against Nokomis of Newport — a seven-on-seven contest — “was the most exciting as all that extra space created numerous breakaway opportunities for both teams.”

The team’s lone victory was a 2-1 triumph over Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.
