AUGUSTA — Three Belfast student-athletes have been deemed All-State for play on the field, while those same three Lions, three Camden Hills Windjammers and two Mount View Mustangs, earned All-State recognition for work in the classroom, announced the Maine Field Hockey Association.

The organization announced Belfast’s Reagan Seekins, Grace Hall and Madison Shorey are All-State players who represent Class B North. The trio are seniors, while Seekins is a back, Hall a forward and Shorey a goalie.

Additionally, the MFHA all-academic All-State team, who are seniors, includes Shorey, Seekins and Hall from Belfast; Gail Curtis, Charlotte Hood and Anna Jordan from Camden Hills; and Cassondra Heath and Cali Warren from Mount View.

The honorees come from Classes A, B and C and include those who play in the North and South regions.

The All-State selections will be recognized at the annual awards banquet on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center. Players recognized for academic All-State will be recognized with a certificate, but not at the banquet.

The criteria for All-State selection, said Lori Smith, the association’s public relations representative and head coach at Thornton Academy in Saco, includes:

• Performs consistently at a high skill level;

• Possesses leadership on and off the field;

• Exhibits excellent sportsmanship;

• Is dedicated to the game of field hockey.

Each varsity coach can nominate up to three players from his/her own team for the honor. The nominees are voted on by all varsity coaches in the state. Each coach may vote for up to 11 players, not including their own.

For 2021, the MFHA gives its media award to Bill Stewart of the Kennebec Journal, Morning Sentinel and Times Record; and its Steph Lunt 12th player award to Alison Nashawaty of Cheverus of Portland.

Finally, the Miss Maine Field Hockey finalists, the winner of which will be announced on Dec. 5 at the banquet, includes Shorey from Belfast, Samantha McGrath from Kennebunk and Sage Works from York.
