Volunteer Fire Department news

The Fire Department responded to two calls over the past week. First we were called to Waldo for an old camper on fire with some extension into brush. We responded with Engine 34 with two on board. Also responding were Tanker 35 and Utility 30 with three more department members. Waldo then put Belfast’s side-by-side ATV in service because of the muddy road/trail to the fire. All other mutual aid was canceled fairly soon after our arrival. Tanker 35 and the Utility were returned to station while Engine 34 stood by on the road. Assistant Chief Randy Markham and Lt. Todd Greeley assisted with the actual fire.

Our next call was Wednesday, Nov. 24, on South Main Street to a motor vehicle rollover shortly after 8 a.m. Engine 32 and Utility 30 responded, along with three firefighters. This was our newest firefighter Tom Fish’s first call. Belfast Ambulance also responded, but the driver did not require transport. Passersby righted the van with a large rope before we arrived, with the driver still inside. A very dangerous move. If the driver had had a neck or spine injury, this could have done serious damage to her. Unless in imminent danger, always wait for medical personnel to arrive and assess.

Our station painting project is moving forward slowly. We are meeting every Tuesday evening for a few hours to work on this. Would like to have more community volunteers come down about 6 p.m. and assist.

And speaking of non-firefighter volunteers, we thank Wendall Ward for volunteering by putting up the cove molding on the walls in our air supply/storage room. This was another project we were trying to get to. Justin Reynolds has volunteered to put up two ceiling lights and connect several electrical boxes in that room soon. Our final need would be to find a volunteer to build us several shelves in that room and in the station itself for storage. If you are willing to take on part or all of this project, please call Jethro for more details. The pay is the satisfaction of knowing you contributed to your community in improving our fire department.

Be warm, be safe, and hug your loved ones.
