Ho-ho-hope you’ve got your shopping done! In addition to shopping locally(!) I am using tarot cards to determine package delivery dates for my other gifts — as that seems to be more effective. My UPS guy has got his wife on board the truck helping out. For that I am thankful, though I’m not sure how she feels about it.

There have been, and are, a number of Christmas markets in the area — watch your newspaper for details! Also, the United Farmers Market on Spring Street in Belfast will be open on Christmas Eve this year, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. With all this giving, please remember our local charities. Seems like folks need help more than ever this season.

Brooks Carol Singers will gather in the parking lot of Moosehead Trail Village — just a quarter-mile north of the intersection of routes 7 and 139. Come share the joy of the season with the residents of Moosehead Trail Village.

Town Office

The town would like to share some reminders as we close out 2021 and head into 2022. How about getting your dog a Christmas gift — a new license tag, aka doggie bling! Don’t forget to bring proof of an updated rabies shot. Regarding mobile homes, it is illegal to move mobile homes without a permit from the Town Office. The owner must file a Certificate of Taxes Paid on the mobile home. These forms are available from the Town Office. All taxes on mobile homes must be paid before a mobile home can be moved out of town.

Nutcracker nugget

I remember fondly all the Yankee Swaps I used to participate in not so long ago. We had them at work, we had them with our neighborhood friends — always a good laugh. One of my favorite gifts, which someone always seemed to bring to the Yankee Swaps, was the ubiquitous Christmas nutcracker. Nutcrackers originated in Germany, and expanded through Europe by the mid-1800s, right around the time my farmhouse, here in Jackson, was being built. They became popular here in the U.S. after WWII, when American soldiers began to return from overseas with Christmas nutcrackers as gifts. I love their bright colors and comical faces — but, I have never actually used one as a nutcracker!
