PITTSFIELD — Howard C. Mehuren, 83, passed away Nov. 23, 2021, at Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. He was born in Montville May 5, 1938, the son of Harold and Doris (Brown) Mehuren.

Howard loved draft horses, owned his own team(s) and enjoyed pulling for 15 years until he had to stop because of an injury. Following his career, he became a dedicated spectator. Throughout the fair season, Howard would travel near and far, golf cart in tow, taking in the horse pulls and catching up with the many close friends he had made throughout the years.

Traveling was something Howard did a lot with his wife, Joyce. Together they ventured across the country to Alaska and Canada, ultimately spending their winters in the warmth of Florida and Arizona and coming home to enjoy their summers among family and friends, boating and barbecuing at the lake in Liberty. During the fall he could be found in the North Woods bear hunting, another one of his many passions.

Howard is survived by three sons, Randy Mehuren, Robert Mehuren, and Ricky Mehuren and wife Brenda, all of Dixmont; two daughters, Rebecca Nealley and husband Dan of Troy, and Rachel Bickford of Pittsfield; a brother, Earl Mehuren, and wife Lorraine of Southbury, Conn.; two stepdaughters, Cheryl Herland and husband Bill of Leland, N.C., and Sheila Woodbury of Greene; three stepsons, David Lavway of Brooks, Cecil Lavway of Hill, N.H., and James Lavway of Hooksett, N.H.; 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Howard was predeceased by his wife, Joyce (Thompson) Mehuren. sisters Hazel Lucas, Esther Behnke, Carrie Cross, Edith Devoe, brothers Donald and John Mehuren and half-brother Clyde Brown.

A graveside service will be held May 7, 2022, at The Homestead Cemetery in Montville, time to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to may make donations in Howard’s memory to Maine Draft Horse Association, 301 Fahi Pond Road, North Anson, ME 04958.
