Happy New Year! Now to remember to write 2022!

I had a great Christmas. Many thanks to Monica at Mac’s Hardware for helping my husband with some of his last-minute shopping. I got gift certificates for Kalaa Does Hair and Heart and Sole Foot Care, a lovely mug from Unity Pond Pottery with hot cocoa mix, and I won the $250 gift card from Unity Shop ‘n’ Save!

I made my rounds on the Thursday and Friday before Christmas. I visited with Tim at Ferreira Trucking and noticed he had a new garage “pet,” a beautiful mostly white pigeon they call “Big Bird” or “Bob.” He looks a little spoiled, with plenty of seed and a place to bathe; he (or she) perches high up on one of the light fixtures.

Owen the opossum made an appearance Dec. 18, so I got to include him in my Christmas bird count, where we also note unusual animals. I had a flying squirrel show up at my feeders bright and early. That was the first time I had ever seen one. Due to lack of snow cover, the bird count was lackluster. I’m hoping to get Tom Aversa’s final tally from the town in the next week or so.

As I noted in the short version of the Unity News a couple weeks ago, Dunkin’ on Main St has opened. The hours are 5 a.m.-8 p.m. Plenty of parking and a double lane drive-thru. It’s a very nice building with a farmer’s porch, an “attic” window and cupola.

Nomination papers for one position for municipal officer (selectman) are available at the Town Office. This is a three-year term. Must be a Unity resident over the age of 18. Deadline for return is Jan. 27, 2022.

Save the dates! Tentative Unity Pond Ice Oval races: Jan. 29, Feb. 12 (possible night race) and Feb. 26, 2022.

The Amish Community Market winter hours are in effect: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday and Thursday. Donuts are Wednesday only until April. The store will close for winter inventory and break Jan. 1, reopening Jan. 17, 2022.

Wondering what you can do with that Christmas tree that’s drying out? Drop it off with Maine TradeHers, 956 Albion Road in Unity, and then go to the bonfire! They will be collecting your bare Christmas trees from now right up until Jan. 22, 2022. From 3-7 p.m. the 22nd say hello to your friends and neighbors, grab some coffee or cocoa, listen to music, shop with local vendors, and have some tasty, locally made snacks and treats! Stone Tree Farm & Cidery will be holding a wine-tasting inside the store, so you can sample delicious wines, too! The Unity Fire Department will be supervising the bonfire, and will be accepting donations to go toward new equipment.

Need a COVID booster? Unity Pharmacy has Moderna on Tuesdays and Pfizer on Wednesdays until 4 p.m. FMI: 948-3950.

I skipped over to Burnham to visit Dion and see the improvements made at Patterson’s Store. I missed Dion, as she was taking a well-deserved vacation.

Congratulations to Gene Paquet on his retirement from UPS, and a heads up to the people of Unity that he will no longer be delivering our wants and needs in the big brown truck. We appreciate your over 30 years of excellent service!
