It’s January and time for new beginnings! Here’s what is happening in Searsport in the next week or two.

Winter birding

When Canada geese go south for the winter, Maine is where they stop for a break. But many bird species winter here in Maine. The Hudson Bay ducks are on the coast, the finches and Canadian nesters move into Maine’s forests. On Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a Zoom presentation by Bob Duchesne, who’s been birding since the first grade. He’s a professional guide and author. If you’d like to tune into this very interesting talk, go to https://networkmaine.zoom.us/1/83550395555. No preregistration is needed. This talk is sponsored by Friends of Sears Island and Carver Memorial Library.

At the library

On Friday, Jan. 7, new DIY kits will be available. This month we’ll be making cute a cute sock snowman.

Wellness Bingo is back! Pick up a Bingo Sheet and for every completed line, chose from the wellness prizes and enter a drawing for the self-care basket drawn on March 1. Wellness Bingo runs through the end of February and will give you cozy and comforting ideas to get you through the Maine winter!

Book Club

This month the selection is ”Beheld” by TaraShea Nesbit. Bonus book is “A Man Called Ove.” Book Club is held on the second Tuesday of the month, Jan. 11,  at 1 p.m. in the Community Building at 42 Prospect St. All are welcome. Come to discuss or just listen in.

Spice Club

Have you joined the Spice Club yet? It’s very popular. This month’s featured spice is turmeric. Try new flavors and get new recipes as you learn something about the history and cultures around the spice. The new spice kit is available on the second Friday of the month, which is Jan. 14. No need to register, just come in and pick up a kit.
