BELFAST — Vertene W. Carter, 94, passed peacefully from this life Jan. 11, 2022. She was a beloved local artist, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. She was born Vertene Whittaker Brown Dec. 18, 1927, in Cambridge Mass., to Irving and Vertene Marsan Brown.

She is survived survived by her son David Sullivan (wife Sandra) of Bristol, R.I.; daughter Nanci Sullivan of Sebago; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Carter, formerly of Belfast; daughter Joyce Eicher, formerly of Reading, Mass.; son Steven Sullivan, formerly of Epping, N.H.; and brothers Richard and Irving Brown.

Vertene began her studies at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, specializing in both oils and watercolors. Thereafter, throughout her life, she continued refining her skills and adopting new techniques, such as plein air painting. She loved sharing her passion and knowledge of her craft and took pride in inspiring others to reach their full artistic potential. She particularly enjoyed gathering among other artists at various art getaways on local islands and Down East and sharing her great love of life, art, cooking, reading and nature with her family and many friends.
