BUCKSPORT — A crash the afternoon of Jan. 18 involving a fuel truck and two cars claimed the life of a 73-year-old Orland man.

At approximately 3:34 p.m., Bucksport Communications Center received a call about a serious crash on River Road (Route 15) near Kinney Drive, according to a press release from Bucksport Police.

A Dead River fuel truck operated by Christopher Cassum, 57, of Clifton had stopped at the railroad crossing and was continuing south when it was struck from the rear by a vehicle operated by James Yates, 73, of Orland, the press release said.  The collision caused Yates’ vehicle to spin into the northbound lane where it was struck by a vehicle operated by Kelly Proulx, 30, of Bucksport.

Yates died at the scene as a result of crash, according to the release. Proulx and her passenger were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Route 15 was shut down for nearly 4 hours from the former north gate of the mill to Town Farm Road during the initial investigation of the crash.

Officer Gerald Lowe of the Bucksport Police Department is the primary investigator.  Bucksport Police were assisted at the scene by the Bucksport Fire Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Maine State Police, Ellsworth Police and the Orrington Fire Department.
