GREENBACKVILLE, Va. — Joseph Merle “Joe” Johnson, 78, passed peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born Dec. 7, 1943, in Dover-Foxcroft, he was the son of Joseph Maurice Johnson and Lois Francis Johnson, who both predeceased him.

He graduated from William G. Crosby High School in Belfast in 1962 and served in the Navy from 1962 to 1966. As a sonarman, he obtained the rank of petty officer third class (E-4) on board the USS Allen M. Sumner (DD 692) out of Mayport, Fla. He later graduated from Gaston College in Dallas, N.C., with an associate degree in industrial management. Professionally, Joe worked as a plant engineer for five different plants of Burlington Industries in North Carolina for 24 years and would later work in public relations and sales. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW and Lincolnton Baptist Church. As a Master Mason for 51 years, Joe cared for his community as a whole through charitable giving and volunteer efforts.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his loving parents and his wife, Linda Carol Johnson, formerly of Lincolnton, N.C., in 2009.

Joe is survived by his sister, Janett J. (David) Sims, of Greenville, S.C.; a daughter and two sons, Laurie A. (Mark) Stanley of Vero Beach, Fla.; Donald D. Johnson of Fayetteville, N.C.; and Scott M. (Maureen) Johnson of Pocomoke City, Md.; five grandchildren, Devin T. Stanley, Tessa L. Stanley, Trinity B. Johnson, Olivia R. Farlow-Johnson and Joseph E. Johnson; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

In fond remembrance of Joe Johnson, there will be a private memorial service for the family and burial service at Saint Albans Village Cemetery, Somerset County, Maine, at a later date.
