BELFAST — The Belfast Police Department reports that it has five active positive COVID-19 cases — the first outbreak for the department since the pandemic began — according to a press release today from City Manager Erin Herbig.

Police Chief Gerry Lincoln does not believe all of the cases are connected. At this point, the Police Department has enough healthy staff members to continue operations as usual, the Jan. 26 press release said. The Police Department office continues to be sanitized daily and is open 24/7. Anyone who needs emergency or police response should call 911 as usual.

This is the first time the department has had to contend with an outbreak since the pandemic began nearly two years ago, the press release said.

“City staff have been diligently following both CDC and city protocols, but the latest variant has made it more challenging as cases have continued to increase in Waldo County,” the press release said.
