As we watch the February snow fall and consider clipping on our trackers to venture out onto the ice outside our door, there are plenty of interesting Zoom and online events going on that might catch your interest.

At the museum

On Fridays at noon in February on Facebook and YouTube, Peek into Paintings takes a closer look at the oil painting “Yacht Defender” by Antonio Jacobson. This is a four-part series that explores relationship between the painting and its connection to Penobscot Bay.

If you’ve ever wondered what all goes into a historical ship restoration, go to Zoom on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. and you can watch the restoration of the Schooner A. J. Meerwald, the 1928 official tall ship of New Jersey. The restoration is happening in Belfast by Clark & Eisele.

Traditional Fiber Arts Workshop Series beginning Thursday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. will begin with exploring the world of Abbie Clifford, a sea captain’s wife, through her knitting. The hands-on workshop will last two hours on Zoom and continue for another two hours on March 3. Kits will be mailed out to participants, so it is important that you sign up soon. The two-part workshop is $60 and you need to register by Feb. 16 by contacting the educational director at 548-2529.

Don’t forget you can get in on Member Monday programs if you would like to join the Penobscot Marine Museum as well as many other programs. Currently Member Mondays features a series called “Peapods of the Maine Coast” on Feb. 14 at noon. Topics vary every month and it gives you a chance to get a closer look at items in the collections and a peek behind the scenes at the museum. Membership ranges from $45 for an individual to $150 for a premium membership with premium benefits.

At the Library

I will miss a column week next week, but I will be back for Feb. 24’s news! In the meantime. I encourage you to celebrate National Grapefruit Month as well as “Do a Grouch a Favor Day” on Feb. 17 and National Chocolate Mint Day on Feb. 19. I’m sure you can figure out how to celebrate that one!
