AUGUSTA — Midcoast high school wrestlers brought home two firsts, five seconds, six thirds and four fourths — including an historic performance from Oceanside’s Maddie Ripley — at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Maddie Ripley (113 pounds) and Camden Hills’ Julian Henderson (120) secured first places in their weight classes, while 15 other area mat athletes from Mount View of Thorndike, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, Belfast, Oceanside of Rockland and Camden Hills of Rockport placed among the top four.

Maddie Ripley, a sophomore, made history as the first female wrestler to win a KVAC individual championship.

The event, not held last year due to the pandemic, usually is contested at Cony High School in Augusta, but was moved to ACC this season.

The following are the top-four finishers, and their weight classes, among the five Midcoast teams:

Belfast — Connor Fournier (2nd at 120), Gabe Kelley (2nd at 160), Pete Lovejoy (2nd at 170), Kaden Bonin (2nd at 132), Hagen Chase (3rd at 106), Ryker Evans (3rd at 113) and Francesco Martin (3rd at 152).

Camden Hills — Julian Henderson (1st at 120), Connor Pease (2nd at 152), Landon Pease (3rd at 132), Henry Pharris (3rd at 182) and Savannah Eastler (4th at 113).

Medomak Valley — Nathan Gess (4th at 285).

Mount View — Anthony Mathous (4th at 182) and Garrett Dunton (4th at 220).

Oceanside — Maddie Ripley (1st at 113) and Gavin Ripley (3rd at 126).

Maddie Ripley, who also was named the meet’s most outstanding Class B wrestler, said it “felt good to win” and she did not believe, at first, she had won and made league history.

Asked what she does well in wrestling the Mariner said she always works hard in practice and hates to lose.

Additionally, Rick Kelley of Belfast and Tony Stevens of Oxford Hills were named the league’s Class B and Class A coaches of year. Skowhegan’s Aidan Clark was the meet’s most outstanding Class A wrestler.

The team scores were: Oxford Hills of South Paris 117.5 (first overall, first among Class A schools), Mount Ararat of Topsham/Brunswick and Belfast 107 (first among Class B schools), Camden Hills 89, Morse of Bath 69, Skowhegan 58, Erskine Academy of South China 56, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 55, Lawrence of Fairfield 52, Oceanside 47, Maine  Central Institute of Pittsfield 40.5, Nokomis of Newport 35, Cony of Augusta 34, Mount Blue of Farmington and Winslow 29, Medomak Valley 26 and Mount View 26, Gardiner 19 and Messalonskee of Oakland 11.

The high school wrestling schedule from this point includes: Feb. 12, regional championships, Class A North at Nokomis of Newport, Class B South at Fryeburg Academy and Class B North at Belfast; Feb. 19, state championships, Class A at Mount Ararat of Topsham and Class B at Morse of Bath; Feb. 22, state duals, Fryeburg Academy; Feb. 23, girls states, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln; and Feb. 25, New England qualifier/All-States, Morse.

Ryker Evans, Bel, received a bye; was pinned by Sean Bonzagni, Mor, at 1:13; pinned Jacob St. Pierre, MtB, at 1:33; and won by major decision over Savannah Eastler, CH, 12-1, in the consolation final. Evans finished third.
