BELFAST — Councilors adopted a proclamation encouraging people in the city to wear masks in indoor public spaces and get vaccinated against COVID-19. It recognizes February as “get fully vaccinated, get your booster and wear a mask awareness month.”

The proclamation came out of a discussion regarding a citywide indoor mask mandate at a previous meeting, which drew sharp opposition from several of members of the public who spoke at that meeting.

Some were business owners in town who thought it would negatively impact their businesses and others were residents who did not want  city government telling them they had to wear a mask indoors.

At that meeting, the majority of councilors opposed a mandate, but thought a proclamation would be an appropriate measure. The proclamation does not require anyone in the city to get vaccinated, get a booster shot or wear a mask while inside, but it encourages residents to do all of those things.
