ISLESBORO — At its meeting Feb. 17, the Select Board approved a contract with Stephen Blatt Architects of Portland, the new architect for the proposed new health center and renovation of the existing clinic space to allow more room for the Fire Department, Public Safety Department and Town Office, according to board member Lauren Bruce.

Bruce also chairs the Public Health and Safety Building Committee that is helping to guide the project.

Previously, 2A Architects of Rockport, the project’s original architect, told the town it did not have the necessary experience developing rural health centers and it wanted to withdraw from the project. The board accepted 2A’s withdrawal at its Feb. 3 meeting, along with the firm’s offer not to charge the town for work done to date.

Bruce said Blatt had worked on the renovation of Islesboro Central School, completed in 2010, and also designed the preschool several years ago. She said she hopes the new firm will interview clinic and public safety employees about their needs by the first week of March and will be ready to talk with her committee by the middle to the end of that month.
