RUMFORD — The Camden Hills Alpine ski team had a strong showing at the state Class A downhill championships on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 17-18 at Black Mountain, as a handful of Windjammers raced down the slopes to supreme success.

On the girls side, the Windjammers finished eighth among 24 squads, while the boys placed seventh among 24 teams.

The Mount Blue of Farmington girls and Freeport/Brunswick boys nabbed Class A team titles.

The giant slalom event was Thursday and slalom Friday.

In addition, the 2022 Alpine Shootout was held on Sunday, Feb. 21, an invitation-only event for racers who finished among top 15 in the previous days’ slalom or giant slalom events.

The goal of the event is to selected a team of 12 boys and 12 girls to represent Maine at the Eastern High School Championships held Thursday through Sunday, March 3-6 at Attitash Mountain in Bartlett, N.H.

Of the four area skiers to qualify to participate in the shootout — Islesboro’s Jett Lindelof and Camden Hills’ Piper Urey, Lily Stowe and Brit LaFiura — Lindelof was able to earn the 12th and final spot on the Maine boys team.

However, first, the area racers enjoyed the state championships.

At the Alpine shootout, each skier competed in four runs — two slalom and two giant slalom — with each run scored separately and the racer’s best place from each discipline added to compile a score.

Lindelof finished seventh and sixth in his two giant slalom runs and 16th and 14th in his giant slalom runs for a score of 20 points.
