LINCOLN — After a season of toiling in coed wrestling meets, high school female mat athletes had the spotlight shone squarely on themselves on Wednesday, Feb. 23 as the group, which included six Midcoast participants, demonstrated their athletic talent.

Three area wrestlers — Camden Hills’ Hayleigh Martz (160 pounds) and Savannah Eastler (120), as well as Oceanside’s Maddie Ripley (113) — finished first in their weight classes in the Maine Principals’ Association girls state championships at Mattanawcook Academy.

Belfast’s Anna Pontillo and Alexia Hopkins, as well as Medomak Valley’s Elizabeth Bowman, also participated in the event.

The tourney included 32 participants from schools across Maine, a positive development after high school wrestling was sidelined in 2020-21 due to the pandemic.

Ripley continued her sensational season, as previously, in coed fields (mostly boys), she won league and regional titles, and finished second in the state championships.

At Wednesday’s tournament, some weight divisions had a bundle of competitors and others one or two. For example, Ripley needed to win one match, Martz two and Eastler three to pin down titles.

Eastler also earned top-four finishes in postseason coed tournaments.

Additionally, Martz and Ripley also won New England titles in their weight divisions in matches on Sunday, Feb. 19 in Massachusetts.

The individual state results for Midcoast wrestlers were:

113 pounds — Maddie Ripley, Ocean, pinned Lilly Lebel, Mount Ararat/Brunwick, in the championship final. Ripley finished first.
