BELFAST — High school students interested in becoming basketball officials have a Midcoast venue and nationally-certificated program to do so.

There is an opportunity to become a Junior International Association of Approved Basketball Officials official by emailing Scott Cournoyer, Eastern Maine Board #111 official, at Cournoyerscott@gmail.com.

Cournoyer offers a unique opportunity for high school students to become a Junior IAABO official. Students gain volunteer hours, and on certification, would officiate third- and fourth-grade games Friday through Sunday, March 18-20 at the Waldo County YMCA.

The commitment is classroom training of approximately 60 minutes, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, March 14-17. Students must attend at least three of the four days to earn certification.

Cournoyer will be courtside at Lions’ Den 3/4 tournament games March 18-19 at the Waldo County YMCA to provide support and feedback for the young officials. The top two officials will have the opportunity to officiate the championship game with Cournoyer on Sunday morning, March 20.

Those interested simply need to email Cournoyer for additional information. Learning and course material is online.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for not only giving back to the community and a sport they all care about, but also will add another dimension, and understanding of the game to all players when they see the game through officials’ eyes,” Cournoyer said.
