Looking for beautiful and edible ideas for your garden? Waldo County Soil & Water Conservation District’s plant sale is up and running.

This year, the district will hold its plant sale and order pickup in conjunction with a “Homestead Day” at Maine TradeHers in Unity. Along with trees, shrubs, perennials and vegetables, shoppers will find locally made products offered by popular farm and craft vendors. In keeping with this homesteading theme, planners have selected plants that provide fruits, nuts, medicinals and other useful products for independent-minded people.

Shagbark hickory is an ornamental tree that provides food for wildlife as well as fuel wood and forest products.

Ordering and payment are available at waldocountysoilandwater.org, as is the 2022 Plant Catalog, which can be downloaded. Plant pickup as well as cash and carry sales (for some additional inventory not listed online) will be held at Maine TradeHers Market, 956 Albion Road, Unity, on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to noon.

For assistance ordering online, call the district office on Wednesdays at 218-5311.

The plant sale is a fundraiser for the district, which returns any proceeds to the community in the form of conservation education, technical and other assistance to local citizens, municipalities and the agricultural community.
