I have been missing Owen the opossum lately, but my husband saw him the other night. He’s competing for food now with the skunks and raccoons that have come out of their winter slumber. At least Owen doesn’t make a mess; the raccoons decimated my bags of returnables that had been stacked up in the corner of the porch.

Don’t forget the annual town meeting on March 26! Registration opens at 8 a.m., followed by the meeting at 9 a.m. There will also be a bake sale and pie auction to support a local charitable effort and Amy Brown will be there to sell raffle tickets for a chance to win an ATV to benefit the Mount View class of 2022.

Annual Town Reports can be found at Mac’s Hardware, the Depot, TA’s Automotive, Unity Public Library, the Town Office and online at

Annual appointments for committees are made in April of each year. Please consider an active role in town affairs. You could serve in any number of committees: budget, economic development, recreation, cemetery, and Planning Board. We are also looking for a new animal control officer, as Crystal Nichols has resigned effective March 31.

The Unity Public Library has expanded its hours, adding Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m.

The Ecology Learning Center is planning some great community events for Earth Day in April, including morning service projects, free lunch at noon, an afternoon of races and games and a late afternoon information session. More details to come.

Gravel roads continue to be troublesome. The ground was saturated in the fall followed by a deep frost. Frozen ground cannot absorb water. Trees, grasses and other perennials are still dormant, so their roots are not taking up any water. The ground thaws from the top down, creating mud; adding gravel makes more mud. We had a limited supply of crushed stone that we applied to the worst spots and some of that ended up in the ditches when the roads needed to be plowed.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. It’s not something “fun” to do, but at least the prep isn’t as bad as it used to be. Please consider getting your colonoscopy scheduled. I took my husband in for his last week and they removed several pre-cancerous polyps. Afterward he was intent on getting some chicken nuggets; he never eats chicken nuggets! He had to settle for a sausage and egg breakfast burrito.
