BELFAST — Matthew Willis, 35, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 12, 2022, of an apparent cardiac event.

Matt graduated from Belfast Area High School in 2005 and the Hancock County Fire Academy in 2008. He continued his studies in fire science at Southern Maine Community College. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, embodying the Scout Oath promise “to help other people at all times.”

Matt was interested in history, especially the Civil War, and was hoping to make another trip to Gettysburg. Matt loved fishing, snowboarding, skateboarding, biking, camping and cooking.

Matt loved sports. He swam, was a Little League and Babe Ruth All-star catcher, played football from peewee through high school, and was a big fan. He liked college football best and he loved the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Matt had a heart as big as the outdoors he loved so much. He loved walking through the woods to remote bass fishing spots. His passion was logging, which he did using his beloved red tractor. He decided to apply to Northern Maine Community College, and was on the list for the next Mechanized Logging program at NMCC.

He is survived by his mother, Jo-Anne; uncle Thomas; aunt Audrey; cousins TJ, Stephen, Laurie and Glenn; his future service dog, Swayman; and cats Hokie and Beemer.

There will be a celebration of Matt’s life at Belfast United Methodist Church Saturday, March 26, at 2 p.m. In honor of Matt’s love of the outdoors, the celebration will be outdoors, weather permitting. Everyone is encouraged to wear bright colors. Matt’s favorite color was purple, but he was most often seen wearing Virginia Tech maroon and gold.

Taken too soon. I will see you in heaven when my time comes. Memories and condolences may be shared at ripostafh.com.
