BELFAST — “The best-laid schemes of mice and men often go awry.” No matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still go wrong. The Belfast Maskers had planned to produce “Mamma Mia!” as its summer musical, but a newly organized national tour caused Music Theater International to cancel the Maskers’ licensing of the show.

But fear not and get ready to audition for the Belfast Masker summer production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” With hit tunes written by Alan Menken and a book by Howard Ashman, “Little Shop” is the perfect summer musical for an ensemble cast. Audiences will be delighted with the characters, songs and plot twists. And for the closet performers out there, there are key roles of puppeteer and the Voice of Audrey II (the large, and ever-hungry, ever-growing plant!) that are crucial to the success of the show. From a hip Trio of tight harmony-singing girls (who comment on every detail in the show) to a zany and sadistic Dentist, to a love smitten Florist Clerk who idolizes his co-worker and would do anything for her… absolutely anything… well, it’s a show that can’t go wrong (until it does!). Sci-fi meets rhythm and blues in this whacky hit that
will have the audience swooning and laughing.

Auditions are Wednesday, May 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Auditionees should come prepared to sing either a song from the show or a favorite Broadway song. (If you are not singing a song from “Little Shop,” please bring sheet music for the accompanist.) Auditions will continue with cold reading and group movement.
