Mid-April and its starting to feel like early May. I hope you were able to take advantage of the free tax service at the community center as taxes are due April 19 this year.

Earth Day is Friday, April 22. Check in at Carver Library for a Monarch kit with information as to how you can contribute to the science of ecology. The kit includes milkweed seeds and is geared for all ages.

Also, I hope you have your reservation for the Ukranian benefit supper at the Congregational Church on Saturday, the 16tth. It’s a take-out Easter meal with ham, scalloped potatoes, carrots, green beans, and dessert. Suggested donation is $15. Call Jayne at 407-694-8733 to reserve your meal. Pick up time is from 3 to 4:30.

Don’t forget the library will be closed for Patriot’s Day, April 18.

Tidy up Searsport

On Saturday, April 23, at 9 a.m. Selectman Steve Tanguay will organize us all as a force for a Spring Clean-Up. Show up at the Mermaid Plaza with your gloves, clippers, rakes and bags and tackle winter debris along the roadways and parks. It’s a lot of fun and it really made a difference in Searsport last year!

Splendiferous Sweet Shoppe

And what says spring more than a festive Easter basket? I dropped into Splendiferous Sweet Shoppe at 21 E. Main St. this week to see what special treats for Easter baskets they might have. In fact, they will make up the whole basket for you and fill it with a cake pop, pretzel carrots, filled chocolate bunnies and of course, jelly beans.

Owner Meryem Rogan and her mom, DeAnne, make many of the chocolates themselves. Meryam started out in the chocolate business when she made some chocolate-covered pretzels for her high school graduation party. Everyone raved about them, so she started to sell them at craft fairs and farmers’ markets. That led her to getting a culinary degree from York County Community College and experimenting with other chocolate goodies.

She is extremely community minded and contributed Valentine goodies to Bayview Nursing Home, a basket for the library and a decorated tree for the high school fundraiser. But what is even more amazing is after meeting her friend, Dr. Mosoka, she has contributed money to pre-natal clinics in Monrovia, Liberia called Refuge Place International, where almost no medical facilities exist. She appears to be a chocolate maker with a heart of gold!
