The Mount View baseball and softball teams began the 2022 regular season with a lengthy bus trip, which likely seemed a longer ride home, as the Mustangs were dealt high school diamond losses by host Sacopee Valley of Hiram in a pair of vacation week doubleheaders.

The Mustang baseball team dropped a hard-fought, 3-2 loss in game one and fell 6-1 in game two, while the softball squad lost 5-4 in game one and 6-3 in game two.

Sacopee Valley 3, Mount View 2

At Hiram April 18, the Hawks were able to soar high enough to emerge with a one-run victory over the Mustangs. Sacopee Valley scored two runs in the third inning and one in the seventh, while Mount View plated single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Draedyn Furrow (run), Noah Hurd (double), Bernie Dodge (run) and Levi Winslow (single) paced the Mustang offense, while Caleb Vacchiano (double, run), Carson Black (single, run), Austin Croteau (double), Bradly Metcalf (single) and Grady Cummings (double, run) keyed the Hawks.

Hurd and Winslow pitched for Mount View as the duo allowed five hits and one walk, with 12 strikeouts. Black pitched for Sacopee Valley and allowed two hits and two walks, with seven strikeouts.

Vacchiano reached to start a two-out rally in the third for the Hawks as he and Black scored later in the inning on a two-run double by Croteau.

The Mustangs tied the game in the later innings when Furrow crossed the plate on an error in the sixth and Dodge came in on a groundout in the seventh, but the Hawks walked it off in the seventh when Cummings doubled to start the frame and later slid just under Furrow’s tag on a close play at the plate for the game-winning run.

Sacopee Valley 6, Mount View 1

At Hiram April 18, the Hawks continued their momentum from game one with a five-run victory in game two. Mount View’s lone run came in the first inning, while Sacopee Valley scored two in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Leading the visitors at the plate were Hayden Porter (single), Declan Knowlton (single, run, stolen base), Calvin Jewett (double) and Hunter Penney (single).

For the hosts, Cummings (double, 3 runs, 2 stolen bases), Black (single, 3 runs), Vacchiano (double), Croteau (2 singles, 2 stolen bases) and Gabe Durgin (single) paced the offense.

Knowlton, Winslow and Dakota Harriman pitched for Mount View as the trio allowed six hits and four walks, with six strikeouts. Cummings pitched for Sacopee Valley and allowed four hits and one walk, with nine strikeouts.


Sacopee Valley 5, Mount View 4

At Hiram April 18, the Hawks soared enough to collect a season-opening win over the Mustangs. Mount View scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Alexa Coffin plated two runs for the ‘Stangs and Payton Munro one.

Madison Roux, Kayleigh Dunton, Bailey Cartier and Madeline Holmes scored runs for Mount View.

Coffin pitched for the Mustangs and walked three to go along with one strikeout, while Elyse Guptill pitched for the Hawks and had one walk to go along with 10 strikeouts.

Sacopee Valley 6, Mount View 3

At Hiram April 18, the Hawks doubled up the visiting Mustangs. Mount View scored one run in the first inning and two in the second, while Sacopee Valley scored one in the first, two in the third and three in the fourth.

Coffin plated two runs for the ‘Stangs and Munro one.

Coffin pitched for Mount View and struck out two batters, while Guptill pitched for Sacopee Valley and fanned eight.
