SEARSPORT — Sylvia “Sue” N. Raymond, 90, of Searsport went to be with Jerry, the love of her life, on April 15, 2022, with her family by her side. Sylvia was born Oct. 27, 1931, in Swanville, the daughter of Earl and Edith (Howe) Smart.

Sylvia and Jerry were married in Winterport on Feb. 5, 1953, and were lifetime residents of North Searsport.

Sylvia graduated from Winterport High School in 1950. She served as Exchange editor, was a part of the glee club and served on several committees. Her quiet and efficient ways proved themselves a great asset through her school years and her lifetime.

Sylvia was employed for many years in the shoe industry, in Belfast and Bangor. Mom’s favorite job was raising us kids and the rest of the kids, “our cousins” in our neighborhood.

Sylvia enjoyed her family and friends. She loved to knit and crochet, and looked forward to her Friday night games of rummy with Kari, Kristy, Trev and Jay (and she kicked their butts!). She loved to camp, fish, cross-country ski, bowl, and play penny poker, and she enjoyed going to bingo with Becky, and going down by the water to have a lobster roll. Mom loved her evening visits from Kev and Becky; she often said, “I love to listen to you two talk about your days.” Mom so enjoyed working in her flower gardens, which were beautiful!

Sylvia, Sue, wife, mom, sister, grams, great grams, aunt and friend, she was tough, independent, kind and knowledgeable. Mom inspired so many and will be remembered for her kindness, love and resiliency.

She was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Edith (Howe) Smart; Gerald J. Raymond, her husband of 53 years, of North Searsport; along with her sister Irene (Wallace) Lockhart; three brothers, Ralph (Dot) Smart, Richard (Barb) Smart, and Clarence (Phyllis) Smart; brother-in-law Gary Philbrick and son-in-law Sidney (Bub) McIntire.

Survivors include her two children, Becky McIntire, and Kevin Raymond and Roz Grotton; sisters Ruth (Ron) Way and Rachel Philbrick; sisters-in-law Sally and Monika; grandchildren Darice, Mandy, Kari (Trev), Kristy (Jay) and Heather (Josh); and great-grands Brandon (Taylor), Bryce (Kristyn), Sydney (Eddie), Cy, Caleb, Keira, Katelyn, Braeden and Ayla.

She is also survived by brother and sister-in-laws, Bonnie, Ellen and Lorraine, and many special nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was a mom to many and special friend to Flo, Laurie, Barb, Stew and Connie.

Mom was loved by her neighborhood, and special neighbors Charlie, Misty and children.

Thank you to everyone who kept an eye out over the years for our mom.

Graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery in Swanville, with Jeff Martin officiating. Services are by Young Funeral Home Searsport,
