Many of the top-tier high school tennis players took a brief reprieve from team play on Saturday, May 7 and looked to take their games — individually — to the next level.

The Maine Principals’ Association state singles qualifiers took place at various sites, as many hoped to be part of the ongoing tournaments.

Of the 13 Midcoast racketeers who competed, only one — Medomak Valley’s Isaac Swain, the top seed at his qualifier — earned a spot in the state tournament.

On Saturday, players had the opportunity to play through a maximum of three rounds. The prelim and first rounds were eight-game pro sets, while the qualifying round was a traditional three-set match.

Qualifiers were held at various sites, including Mount Ararat High School of Topsham, Hermon High School, Brunswick High School and Hampden Academy, among others.

Camden Hills of Rockport, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro and Oceanside of Rockland boys competed at Brunswick, while Medomak Valley and Oceanside girls competed at Mount Ararat and Belfast players at Hermon.

The Windjammer girls did not have an entrant in the qualifier.

The MPA state singles tournament is slated to begin on Friday, May 20 at Lewiston High School, with the individual championships decided on Monday, May 23 at the same venue.
