PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Earl F. Howes, formerly of Jefferson, Maine, passed away at the age of 80 at his home in Port Richey, Fla., April 25, 2022, with his wife, Barbara, and son, Jeff, by his side.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara (Philbrook) Howes; his son, Jeffrey E. Howes of Windsor, Maine; daughter, Sherry Howes of Machias, Maine; two grandchildren, Kaitlynn A. Howes of Oakland, Maine, and Nicholas J. Howes of Lutz, Fla.; three sisters, Roberta (Emery) Whitcomb of Brooks, Maine, Marilyn Sawyer of Clinton, Maine, and Sandra Roberts of Thomaston, Maine; three sisters-in-law, Donna (George) Pottle, Romana (Lawrence) Dennison, and Wanda Gamage-Wyman; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Earl was predeceased by his parents Clayton and Phyllis (Dunn) Howes, three brothers-in-law, Rick Sawyer, Norman Roberts and George Pottle, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Earl was born in Montville, Maine, Aug 10, 1941. He graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast, Maine, in 1960. He worked at many different jobs including his family’s store, Howes General Store located in Searsmont, Maine, and truck driving for Sprowl Brothers, Merrill Transport, Calderwood Bread Co. He later worked as a guard at the Maine State Prison in Thomaston. He retired from the Hallowell Pre-Release Center in 2001.

Earl and Barb enjoyed many years of camping — mainly at Sennebec Lake Campground in Appleton, Maine. They also loved traveling, going to Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and several other states.

After retiring, they became “snowbirds,” traveling to Florida in the winters from their home in Jefferson. They moved to Port Richey, Fla., permanently in the fall of 2018.

Graveside services will be held this summer at Lakeview Cemetery in Union, Maine. Information on exact date and time will be forthcoming.
