Although results are incomplete and unofficial, former Rep. Bruce Poliquin appears to have carried Waldo County in his U.S. District 2 Republican primary victory over Elizabeth Caruso of Caratunk.

With 22 of the county’s 26 municipalities reporting, Poliquin polled 1,232 votes to Caruso’s 810. Statewide, with 395 of 421 precincts reporting, the former congressman was ahead Wednesday night with 60% of the votes, a total of 21,377, to 14,309, or 40% for Caruso, who has conceded.

In Waldo County primary contests, Reagan Paul won the GOP nomination in Maine House District 37, beating Kevin Kelley in all five towns, 227-98. Paul will face fellow Winterport resident Margaret English-Flanagan, a Democrat, in the fall, seeking to represent Winterport, Searsport, Stockton Springs, Prospect and part of Frankfort.

With all towns reporting in the Republican primary for House District 38 (Unity, Thorndike, Knox, Jackson, Brooks, Monroe, Waldo, Swanville and the remainder of Frankfort), Ben Hymes of Waldo unofficially won the nomination over Jesse Waryck of Brooks, 293-246. Democrat Robyn Stanicki of Unity and Green Independent Betsy Garrold of Knox will compete with the winner in November.

With all results in, Republican Katrina Smith of Palermo outpaced Republican Jennifer Tuminaro of China in House District 62, 524-316. In the fall, Smith will vie with Democrat Pam Swift, also of Palermo, to represent their town, along with China, Windsor and Somerville.

The sole Democratic primary contest Tuesday was for the Waldo County Commission’s District 1 seat, representing Belfast, Belmont, Islesboro, Lincolnville, Morrill, Northport and Waldo. With tallies from all but Morrill, incumbent Commissioner Betty Johnson of Lincolnville was well ahead of challenger Owen Smith of Belfast, 565-285. The winner will face Republican David Thompson of Waldo in November.

There were no primary battles in other districts of which Waldo County towns are a part. In District 40 (Liberty, Montville, Morrill, Searsmont, Lincolnville, Islesboro and Appleton), incumbent Democratic Rep. S. Paige Zeigler of Montville will face Republican Tricia Harrington of Liberty in the general election.

In District 63 (Freedom, Albion, Winslow and Unity Township), Democrat Phillip Bloomstein of Freedom will challenge Republican Scott Cyrway of Albion in the Nov. 8 election.
