SEARSPORT — Shirley A. Cook, 93, took his Final Honor Flight with our Lord to join his dear wife, Irene, and children in Heaven Wednesday, June 8, 2022.

He was born in Belfast, Sept. 11, 1928, the son of Fred and Gertrude (Seekins) Cook.  Shirley served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served with the 8th Army, 565th Grave Registration Company, reaching the grade of Staff Sergeant and earning five medals during his service including five Bronze stars.

Upon returning home from the war, he worked in the poultry industry for 28 years, as a laborer for the Town of Searsport for 25 years, and most recently worked at Hamilton Marine in Searsport for 20 years, where he worked until October 2021.  Shirley loved staying busy, working, doing for others, traveling and sightseeing. Shirley loved God, family and friends. He thanked God every day for watching out for him and protecting him.Shirley is survived by his son, Ronald Cook and wife, Barbara, of Searsport, and daughter, Brenda Williams of New Mexico, plus 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  Shirley is also survived by one sister, Mildred Belyea of Northport, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Wayne Hamilton and the folks at Hamilton Marine were his extended family. Shirley and his wife, Irene, raised multiple children as their own after the loss of their parents. Family was very important to Shirley.Shirley’s son, Ronald, and his wife, Barbara, dedicated the last few years of Shirley’s life to his care, providing him the ability to remain in his home he loved and to be near the people he loved.

His first granddaughter, Sherry Howard, was his advocate and assisted him in his journey with his medical providers and needs. His grandson, Gary Cook, provided transportation to many of his appointments and assisted him in his home. Shirley’s niece, Nettie Corbin, also helped care for him in his home.   In addition to his parents, Shirley was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Irene (Ward) Cook in July 2017, two children, Lee R. Cook of Virginia and Ruth Ann Spacco of Searsport, and three brothers, Wesley Cook, Edwin Cook, and Stanley Cook. A funeral service will be held Friday, July 1, 2022, at 2 p.m. at Faith Temple Church, Route 52 (189 Lincolnville Avenue) in Belfast.
