THOMASTON — After being unable to be lit, sizzle and take off for two years due to the pandemic, the Thomaston Fourth of July “Firecracker” 5-kilometer road race and children’s one-mile fun run returned with proverbial bangs on Monday morning as the events attracted 140 participants of all ages and fitness levels.

The 3.1-mile run/walk was an opportunity for participants to shake off rust over the up-and-back Beechwood Street course.

In the end, on another hot morning, William Heslam (17:49.39), 17, of Belmont, N.H. outdueled Sean Meehan (17:53.13), 22, for the overall title, while the first female finisher was Lilly Tuck, 20, who was third overall among 104 at 18:41.61. Meehan and Tuck are from Providence, R.I.

In the children’s one-mile run, Evan Rush, 12, raced away from the 36-runner field in 6:05.51. He bested the field by nearly 30 seconds, a whopping span over a one-mile race distance.
