BELFAST — Andrew Webster submitted a formal resignation letter at the Searsport Select Board meeting July 6. Select Board members discussed the matter in an executive session during the meeting.

The resignation comes after Webster was summoned for allegedly receiving stolen Barney Hose Company property or funds. His fiancée, Gina Philbrick, was arrested for allegedly embezzling about $11,600 from the organization while she was the treasurer. Webster had been on suspension pending the outcome of the investigation of the alleged embezzlement.

Barney Hose Company raises funds to support the Fire Department and its members, according to Town Manager James Gillway.

The two assistant fire chiefs will run the department until Select Board members decide how they want to fill the vacant position.

Previously, Webster told The Republican Journal that he expected to be reinstated as fire chief. Webster was not immediately available for comment regarding his resignation.
