SANFORD — The Midcoast Babe Ruth League was well-represented at the double-elimination state all-star tournament Friday through Sunday, July 15-17 as 15 players left it on the diamond over the team’s three-game run.

Ultimately, Midcoast, after earning an exciting, 9-8 walk-off win over Augusta on Friday, went 0-2 on Saturday against Tri-County and Franklin County to finish 1-2 be eliminated from tournament play.

Midcoast drew the early game Saturday — with a 9 a.m. first pitch — and came up on the short end of a 7-3 defeat at the hands of Tri-County before falling to Franklin County 4-0 in the 6 p.m. elimination game.

Friday’s games were at Blouin Field, while Saturday’s games were at Goodall Park.

Two games — including the championship game — were scheduled for Sunday at Blouin Field, with a potential “if”game slated for Monday, July 18 back at Goodall Park.

Midcoast is comprised of players from the six teams that competed in the Midcoast Babe Ruth League, which wrapped Sunday, July 10 when Waldoboro defeated Rockland Ford for the championship.

The players come from Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, including teams from Damariscotta, Waldoboro, Rockland, Belfast and Five Towns.

Team members for Midcoast, coached by Thomas Hedstrom and Bart Hotchkin, include Josh Blake, Blade Brann, Garak Brimer, Hayden Brimer, Caleb Butler, Dominic Frisone, Porter Gahagan, A.J. Giberson, Owen Hotchkin, Eric LeBlond, Bryson Mattox, Spencer McDaniel, Owen McManus, Jacob Watkinson and Dylan Winslow.

The following is a recap of the area team’s tournament run:

Franklin County 4, Midcoast 0

At Sanford July 15, Midcoast was kept off the scoreboard and bounced from the tourney. Franklin County plated one run in the first inning, one in the second and two in the fourth.

Hotchkin had the lone hit for Midcoast — a single in the fourth inning — while Franklin County was paced at the plate by Killion Pillsbury (2 singles, run), Bryce Wilcox (single, run), Cameron Gray (2 singles, stolen base), Paxton Mitchell (2 singles), Nick Rowe (single), Ash Rollins (run, steal) and Max LaBonte (single, run, steal).

Gahagan toed the rubber for Midcoast and allowed nine hits and three walks, with four strikeouts. Logan Dube pitched for Franklin County and tossed a one-hit shutout as he yielded two walks and struck out five.

“I’m proud of this team” said Hedstrom. “They played hard and had fun. The players really came together as teammates and friends. Porter Gahagan led us on the mound, Josh Blake had a good tournament hitting and Blade Brann and Dylan Winslow were vocal leaders. This is a great group of baseball players.”

Tri-County 7, Midcoast 3

At Sanford July 15, Tri-County bounced Midcoast from the winner’s bracket with a four-run victory. Midcoast plated one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, while Tri-County scored one in the second, two in the third and four in the fifth.

Midcoast was led at the plate by Butler (run), Blake (single, run, stolen base) and Watkinson (single, run). For Tri-County, Walker (double, 2 runs), Dodge (double, 2 runs), Trundy (single), Capano (single, run, stolen base), Peterson (single, run), West (2 singles) and Malo (single, run) paced the offense.

Giberson, Mattox and Blake pitched for Midcoast and allowed eight hits and two walks, with nine strikeouts. Capano and Wallace pitched for Tri-County and allowed two hits and five walks, with nine strikeouts.

Tri-County led 3-0 after three innings of play and assumed control of the game with a four-run fifth, which began when Malo singled and Wallace doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Dodge then reached on an error — which plated Malo — while Wallace came in on a groundout.

Later in the inning after Capano reached on an infield single, he promptly stole second base. That drew the throw from Winslow behind the plate, which allowed Dodge to come in the back door. Dodge came in moments later in an error to give Tri-County a 7-0 advantage.

Hotchkin came in on an error in the sixth — while Blake came in on an RBI-groundout and Watkinson on an wild pitch in the seventh — but Midcoast could not complete the comeback.

Midcoast 9, Augusta 8

At Sanford July 15, Midcoast got a walk-off single by Blake as Midcoast collected its first win of the tournament. Midcoast scored two in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth and two in the seventh, while Augusta scored three in the first, four in the second and one in the fourth.

Midcoast was led at the dish by Winslow (2 runs), Owen Hotchkin (run), Giberson (single, 2 runs, stolen base), LeBlond (single, run), Brann (2 singles, run), Blake (2 singles, run, RBI, 2 stolen bases), Mattox (run, stolen base) and Owen McManus (double).

For Augusta, Jake Farnham (single, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases), Keegan Cary (run), Chase Burgess (triple, run), Walker Dumas (single, run), Landen Blodgett (double, run), Trent Collins (single), Gage McGrane (run) and Zack Reed (run) paced the offense.

Watkinson and Porter each toed the rubber for Midcoast as the duo allowed five hits and struck out nine. Blodgett and Hayden Chase pitched for Augusta and allowed seven hits and fanned 15.
